When it comes to photography, it just kind of happened. I know it sounds cliché, but it was almost an instinct to document the things I loved from an early age. I pretty much saw life that way. (Told you it was cheesy, but true!) It was through years of photographing niches for different businesses I worked in (portraits and details for me for fun, stylized food and head shots as a freelance photographer for local newspaper Creative Loafing, and interiors for publication when I spent several years as an Interior Designer). From fashion to graphic design, culinary arts and interior design, I adore all artistic fields, so that combined with my love and instinct to document life and collect moments inspired me to pursue wedding photography, the land where all things creative collide! It’s where I get to incorporate everything I love and meet amazing people along the way! Dabbling in a little bit of everything worked out perfectly and I wouldn’t have it any other way..
By word of mouth, for sure! For me it’s incredibly important to be real and have established trust with a Bride, so by creating a strong online presence and making friends it shows that you genuinely care and have their best interests in mind!
Fun, bright, and dreamy! I want my clients to have an amazing experience with each other while in front of my camera and I always want them to look at their images and see their love for one another beaming through. Their photos should always remind them of their love. Nothing is better than when you look at an image and say “that’s ME! That’s the real me, 100%.” You know, when you feel as beautiful as you look and you can see your soul shining through . I want that experience for each of my clients. And of course I have to incorporate my obsession with bright, clean colors and light!
Well, I’m a talker. I aim to always be Ashley, even if that means making a fool of myself, so that typically gets a giggle out of people. I aim to make the experience less about the perfect photo and more about the moment. Recently I have been more concise with giving direction to clients, this frees them up from any nervousness and encourages them to relax and be themselves. Whenever I can inspire someone to open up and let their inner self shine, that’s when magic happens.
Are you Canon or Nikon?Canon, duh. ;) Ha! No, but really it’s just what I happened to pick up first so I stick with it. No teaching this old dog new tricks. Well, I take that back, I am re-teaching myself to shoot film.
What’s your favorite lens?
35mm 1.4. It includes just enough room to tell an incredible story in that frame! I love shooting with my iPhone everyday and I feel their perspectives are similar, that’s what made me realize I need to add it to my arsenal.
What tip would you give aspiring photographers?
Learn from others, but don’t feel like you have to do what everyone else is doing. Don’t get caught up in other people’s work or successes (easier said than done!) and try different things out for yourself. Pave your own way. Then you’ll love that route even more.
Where do you see your career in 5 years?
Let me ask my physic Rose. Ha! I’m no Kim Zolciak, so I have no idea! I myself have witnessed how you can plan all day long but often times life has other things in store for you (says the Interior Designer in her past life!). But I love Hawaii, so I would love to stay here a while, but I would also loveeeeee a jaunt over to Europe. Most importantly, I want the end result of my business to not only be telling the stories of my gorgeous clients and making friends, but I hope to encourage others to make their dreams happen somewhere along the way.
Where can we find you (facebook, twitter, pinterest, etc)? There are a lot. Are you ready for this??
