Hazy Watermark Cut-out Instructions

Stacie Jensen July 17, 2012 3 Comments

So the latest and greatest watermarking is what I would describe as a hazed watermark cut-out.  Basically a screened overlay is made and your watermark text or logo cuts through the haze to show the actual photo below.  Not always the best as it will lighten your image from what will be the actual colors for print BUT it will certainly protect you from someone printing without the watermark being in effect.

Step 1:  Make a new fill layer.  This sample shows a white fill layer but you can make it ANY color you want such as cream. You must select that the FILL is low such as 26%

Step 2:  Make your watermark text with a bold font – skinny font’s will not work here.  Make the text white and the fill 0%.  This will momentarily make it disappear.  That’s normal.  Now right click on the font layer and click “Blending Options” and under Advanced Blending click on Knockout drop down and choose Shallow.

If you have a watermark paintbrush you do not have to add text just add a new layer, paint the watermark in a spot on the photo with your brush set to white, go to your layer palette and change the fill to 0%.  This will momentarily make it disappear.  That’s normal.  Now right click on the font layer and click “Blending Options” and under Advanced Blending click on Knockout drop down and choose Shallow.

If you have a logo then you can go to File>Place and find your logo, then go to the layers palette and change the layers fill to 0%.  Right click and choose “Blending Options” and under Advanced Blending click on Knockout drop down and choose Shallow.

Note:  You can wipe much of the color overlay layer off your image by clicking on that layers “layer mask” and with a black paintbrush paint over the areas you do NOT want the haziness (not where the logo is of course).
